Kobylianska was carried out regarding the peculiarity of the functioning of the sociolinguistics terms which were significant at the end of the 19th \u2013 at the beginning of the 20th century and remain so in modern Ukrainian linguistics. We consider the investigated terms to be key ones regarding the discourse of the writer\u2019s letters, as they are frequent and important for the presentation of her linguistic consciousness. The term competence of the writer regarding the use and understanding of terms with components <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 (\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430, \u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043b\u0456\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0430, \u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u0430\u0442\u0440\u0456\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0430), \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 (\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u0438\u043a, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0441\u0432\u0456\u0442, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043a\u043d\u0438\u0436\u043a\u0430, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u043e\u0441\u043b\u043e\u0432\u0438\u0446\u044f, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u0440\u0438\u043f\u043e\u0432\u0456\u0434\u043a\u0430, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043d\u0430\u0442\u0443\u0440\u0430, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u0456\u043d\u0442\u0435\u043b\u0456\u0433\u0435\u043d\u0446\u0456\u044f, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u0430\u043d\u0456, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0432\u0435\u0447\u0456\u0440\u043e\u043a), \u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 (\u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430, \u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043d\u043e\u0432\u0435\u043b\u0430, \u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u0434\u0443\u0448\u0430, \u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0442\u0438\u043f)<\/em>, as well as the term <em>\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em> (in the writer\u2019s presentation, a variant \u043c\u0430\u0442\u0456\u0440\u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430 is used, that is <em>\u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430 \u043c\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0456, \u0440\u0456\u0434\u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em>), as well as ethnonym terms <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0435\u0446\u044c, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d \/ \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d\u043a\u0430 (\u0442\u0443\u0442\u0435\u0448\u043d\u0456\u0439 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d, \u0431\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d, \u0430\u0432\u0441\u0442\u0440\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d)<\/em> and <em>\u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u043e\u0441<\/em> were monitored. It is demonstrated that O. Kobylianska is in solidarity with modern linguists that the term <em>\u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d<\/em> is a synonym for <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0435\u0446\u044c.<\/em> She calls herself <em>\u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d\u043a\u0430 (\u0431\u0443\u043a\u043e\u0432\u0438\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u0440\u0443\u0441\u0438\u043d\u043a\u0430), \u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u043a\u0430<\/em>, in particular <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043f\u0430\u0442\u0440\u0456\u043e\u0442\u043a\u0430<\/em>. The writer unequivocally considers <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/em> to be her <em>\u0440\u0456\u0434\u043d\u0430,<\/em> <em>\u043c\u0430\u0442\u0435\u0440\u0438\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em>, using the synonymous terms <em>\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em> or<em> \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u0438\u043a<\/em>, which is characteristic of the scientific discourse of that era. In the discourse of her letters, the writer reflects on the interpretation of the term <em>\u0440\u0456\u0434\u043d\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em>. In her understanding, it is not the one that is the language of everyday communication, which its speaker has an impeccable command of, but the one that is recognized as native, taking into account speaker\u2019s origin and conscious choice. The term <em>\u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em> is synonymous with <em>\u0443\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430, \u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0432\u0430<\/em> or <em>\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u044f\u0437\u0438\u043a<\/em>. However, like other terms with component <em>\u043c\u0430\u043b\u043e\u0440\u0443\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439,<\/em> O. Kobylianska uses it less often.<br \/>\n<strong>Key words<\/strong>: O.
