Abstract<\/strong>
\nIn this article authors take into consideration usage of the verb \u201cshow\u201d in journalistic materials on the basis of reference literature and their own editorial experience. The article focuses on explanation of the meaning of these word in \u201cA great Ukraine dictionary of the modern usage\u201d (compiler and main editor V.T. Busel). Materials for analysis are selected from the Ukrainian national daily newspaper \u201cThe Day\u201d. \u201cRussian-Ukrainian dictionary in three tomes\u201d, \u201cDictionary of synonyms of the Ukrainian language\u201d, \u201cDictionary of Shevchenko\u2019s language\u201d and \u201cA great Ukraine dictionary of the modern usage\u201d (executives of the publishing project P.M. Movchan, V.V. Nimchuk, V.Y. Klichak) were used for analysis. Examples are provided with Ukrainian dictionary in eleven tomes and Dictionary of the Ukrainian language (emphasis. with add. vlas. material B. Hrinchenko).
\nIt is stated that it is correct to use the verb \u201cshow\u201d in the meanings \u201cto give the opportunity to see, consider, look at someone or something\u201d; \u201cShow someone your ability to do something\u201d; \u201cShow a movie, give a play\u201d; \u201cTo do something to teach someone; to teach visually\u201d; \u201cGive for review, review, verification, evaluation, etc.\u201d; \u201cMake visible someone, something, opening, illuminating, etc.\u201d; \u201cMovement, gesture, gaze, etc. to point at someone or something, attracting someone\u2019s attention, explaining something\u201d.
\nHowever, to use \u201cshow\u201d in the sense of \u201cto establish something (inspection, research, survey, etc.) … To testify about something, to be proof of something; give grounds for any conclusion\u201d is considered a lexical error.
\nIt is noted that the designation \u201cto detect something (inspection, research, survey)\u201d; \u201cTo testify about something, to be proof of something\u201d; \u201cGive grounds for any conclusion\u201d to use correctly \u201cdiscover\u201d, \u201cdetermine\u201d, \u201cfind out\u201d, \u201ctestify\u201d, \u201cconfirm\u201d, \u201cdemonstrate\u201d, etc., and not the lexem \u201cshow\u201d.
