The aim of the study is to conduct a semantic and functional analysis of compound words in the writer’s artistic discourse, to clarify the methods of forming compounds, and to identify the peculiarities of their use. The material of the research includes the writer’s short stories collected in the book “After the Third Ring, Entry to the Hall is Prohibited.”
As a result of the analysis, a large corpus of compound nouns was identified in the works of Oksana Zabuzhko. It was found that the most numerous groups among the compounds are adjectives and nouns, while compound adverbs and verbs occur less frequently.
The semantic analysis of compound nouns has shown that the most common types in the writer’s works are compounds denoting persons and abstract notions. All identified compound nouns are formed according to traditional word-formation models of the Ukrainian language. The productive means of forming compounds are stem compounding and word compounding. In Zabuzhko’s prose, compound nouns often serve as an important figurative and expressive means of characterizing a person.
A considerable number of compound adjectives were also identified. They frequently describe a person’s appearance, inner qualities, character traits, and emotional state. Compound adjectives modifying abstract nouns (names of emotions, feelings, etc.) enhance the expressive tone of the text. Many of these formations create vivid metaphorical images reflecting the psychological state of a character. Compound adjectives in Zabuzhko’s works often serve as bright evaluative and expressive linguistic units.
Only a small number of compound verbs were found, while compound adverbs were more numerous. By their semantics, the latter can be grouped into the following categories: manner, measure and degree, time, and place.
It was established that most of the identified compound nouns and adjectives are two-component, although several examples with three roots (components) were also recorded.
The analysis revealed that the majority of compounds in Zabuzhko’s prose are individual and author-specific, possessing distinct stylistic coloring. They vividly demonstrate the originality of the writer’s idiostyle and artistic mastery.
Compound nouns in Oksana Zabuzhko’s prose serve as a significant means of enhancing linguistic expressiveness and testify to the richness of the author’s imagery and verbal artistry.
Key words: compound word, compound noun, compound adjective, composite, word-formation, stem compounding, expressiveness.

REFERENCES
Klymenko, N.F.
