Abstract
The article explains the thematic diffusion of vocabulary in the language of the Ukrainian mass media, in particular, the use of medical nominations in socio-political topics.
The source base was the texts of the Ukrainian mass media from 2022 to 2024 – the period of the full-scale Russian-Ukrainian war.
The purpose of the article is to investigate the medical vocabulary recorded in the language of modern Ukrainian mass media, to determine the lexical meaning and functional load of selected linguistic units.
Achieving the set goal involves solving the following tasks: analyze medical vocabulary, in particular, units that function in social texts; outline the lexical range of verbal units; to analyze the use of lexemes both in mass media texts and in heading complexes of information resources; characterize the functional and stylistic features of words during the Russian-Ukrainian war.
The following research methods made it possible to achieve the goal and complete the task: descriptive, with the help of which lexemes selected from mass media texts were inventoried, systematized and classified; the method of complex analysis, which contributed to the analysis of language units in the lexical-semantic aspect; the method of contextual semantic analysis, used to study lexemes with an emphasis on the intratextual environment; with the method of component analysis – in order to reveal the semantic features of lexical units; with the method of quantitative calculations – to determine trends in the use of words in the texts and headlines of media publications.
The corpus of the collected material testified to the actualization of the negative evaluation in the language of the mass media, the expansion of the meanings of tokens already known in the language, and the sluggishness of the tendency to talk about Ukrainian journalism.
Key words: diffuseness, vocabulary, medical vocabulary, figurative meaning, thematic direction, emotional and expressive coloring, negative evaluation, stylistic role.
