Abstract
The article presents a linguistic and stylistic analysis of Borys Hrinchenko’s short story “Stole”, which is a vivid example of Ukrainian realist prose of the late 19th – early 20th century. Lexical, morphological, and syntactic units of the text, as well as artistic devices that contribute to the depiction of social and psychological conflict, the creation of character images, and the realization of the aesthetic function of the work, are identified. It is found that lexemes denoting rural life form the linguistic background of the depicted reality, deepen the social context of the story, and clearly mark the social status of the characters; emotionally colored vocabulary conveys the heroine’s mental state and inner experiences; idiomatic expressions help to create vivid imagery, adding linguistic color and expressiveness to the text. It is revealed that the author’s predominant use of past-tense verb forms is determined by the genre of the short story and the narrative structure of the text, while the syntactic conciseness of simple sentences reflects the naturalness of the author’s speech, enhances the credibility of the described events, brings the language of the text closer to the characters’ speech, and conveys the emotional intensity of their experiences. Artistic devices such as metaphors, epithets, and comparisons are analyzed, which enhance the emotionality and imagery of the story. The language of the characters and the narrator is characterized, showing how they organically combine to form an artistic text with a high degree of expressiveness and emotionality. It is concluded that all linguistic and stylistic means of the story serve the realization of its aesthetic function – promoting tolerance, mutual assistance, and condemning cruelty and indifference. The work not only reflects social reality but also prompts the reader to reflect on the moral and ethical problems of society.
Key words: linguistic and stylistic text analysis, emotionally colored vocabulary, idiomatic expressions, verb forms, syntax of the work, aesthetic function of the work.
