Abstract
The language of Vasyl Stefanyk’s works is generously filled with repetitions of words and word combinations that create an expressive and descriptive effect, provide a distinct stylistic coloring, and serve as a specific means of organizing the literary text of the short-story writer. In the language of Stefanyk’s works we encounter various types of phonetic, morphological, lexical, and syntactic repetitions. Lexico-syntactic repetitions play an important compositional role in the writer’s short stories, as they constitute a very significant, and often the only, means of structuring the text. In Stefanyk’s short stories, as a rule, there is no division into chapters or parts; the work is constructed as a continuous text in which phrase connections create an almost imperceptible transition from one idea to another and establish coherence both between individual paragraphs and between sentences within paragraphs.
Repetitions in the literary language of Vasyl Stefanyk also perform a number of stylistic functions. They exert a noticeable emotional influence on the reader, serve as a means of rhythmic organization of speech, and effectively intensify elements of the utterance. The use of polysyndeton in the language of the short-story writer functions as a means of expressive organization and textual integrity.
Thus, repetition and polysyndeton in the literary language of Vasyl Stefanyk create a vivid artistic and figurative effect. In addition to providing compositional elegance to the text, repetitions perform numerous stylistic functions: they intensify the emotional impact on the reader, ensure the rhythm and melody of the text, and serve as a means of logical emphasis of the elements of the utterance. Repetitions and polysyndeton create a special coloring of emphasized details, strengthen the persuasiveness of arguments, give speech imagery, and contribute to the artistic completeness of the text. Through various types of repetition, Vasyl Stefanyk succeeded in vividly reflecting the syntactic features of oral conversational speech. Repetitions of words and word combinations in the writer’s literary language serve as a specific means of conveying the feelings of the characters in the short stories; they function as an original stylistic device for expressing the semantic, emotional, and psychological aspects of the depicted events and phenomena.
Key words: repetition and polysyndeton, the literary language of Vasyl Stefanyk, stylistic aspect, text, short-story writer.
