Abstract
The article examines the phenomenon of truncated sentences in contemporary poetic discourse, focusing on the poetry collections of Viktor Krupka and Tetiana Yakovenko. These structures are substantiated as a significant form of compressive syntactic innovation that effectively combines formal incompleteness with profound semantic saturation. The study emphasizes that unlike standard elliptical or incomplete sentences, truncated units lack intonational and meaningful finality, thereby creating an open space for reader interpretation and cognitive interaction.
A significant contribution of the research is the development of a functional-semantic classification of truncated syntactic units. Four distinct types are identified: 1) aposiopesis, representing emotional breaks triggered by intense psychological states where verbalization yields to pure feeling; 2) meditative-contemplative sentences, used to convey a sense of calm or diffuse spatio-temporal boundaries; 3) conceptually incomplete structures, which are elliptical breaks containing implicit philosophical conclusions requiring the recipient’s active reflection; and 4) retrospective-dotted sentences, reflecting the fragmented and non-linear nature of human memory.
The analysis reveals that these syntactic innovations are pragmatically motivated, serving as tools to express attitudes and emotional states that defy direct verbalization. In Krupka’s poetry, these units often manifest as dynamic pauses or existential tremors, whereas in Yakovenko’s work, they tend toward lyrical fading and contemplative silence. The research concludes that truncated sentences implement the principle of linguistic economy while simultaneously deepening the psychological and aesthetic impact of the text. They function as deliberate stylistic tactics that transform the reader from a passive recipient into an active co-author of the poetic image.
Key words: truncated sentences, syntactic compression, poetic discourse, idiostyle, aposiopesis.
