Abstract
Broad understanding of clichés in modern studies leads to the lack of clear formulation of the semantic and syntactic typology of such linguistic formations. The very concept of “the cliché” needs to be clarified and separated from related formations – phraseological units, clichés, catchphrases, quotations, exclamations, etc. There is also a lack of thorough research into the semantic and lexical-grammatical properties of clichés. The issue of importance and reasonability of using clichéd units, many of which still require lexicographic description, remains controversial. The aims of this work are to determine the linguistic status of language clichés, to identify their essential characteristics as linguistic units and as manifests of communication processes, to develop reliable criteria for distinguishing clichéd expressions from similar formations (phraseological units, proverbs, sayings, terms, interjections, etc.), to outline the main semantic and syntactic types of such stable units, to describe the main models of cliché formation, to raise a number of issues related to the practice of modeling language clichés in lexicography, to study the ways of their transformation based on multi-genre sources of the Ukrainian language for the purposes of creating the Dictionary of the active type of the modern Ukrainian literary language – the latest modern lexicographic source of the lexical and phraseological repertoire of the Ukrainian language in the early XXI century, which is currently being created by scientists of the Department of Lexicology, Lexicography and Structural-Mathematical Linguistics of the Institute for Ukrainian Language of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
Key words: language clichés, types and models of language clichés, cliché modeling in the modern explanatory dictionary.
