Abstract
The verbal presentation of these female scholars in the media portraits under analysis demonstrates a creative and original use of linguistic resources, aimed at creating a coherent image of a prominent figure within the informational and cultural context of the era. Within their own time, there is every reason to regard Daria Vikonska, Kateryna Hrushevska and Olena Kurylo as elite linguistic figures thanks to their academic and creative output. At the same time, in the analysed episodes of Iryna Farion’s authorial project, we observe the self-presentation of the elite linguistic figure of the scholar-linguist, who, in her role as host of an educational programme, demonstrates the potential of verbal and non-verbal communication resources to achieve the maximum suggestive effect of scientific information.
Iryna Farion constructs biographical reconstructions of the lives of these figures in considerable detail. The exception is Olena Kurylo, but for objective reasons – the very limited amount of biographical information available. Presentations of the figures’ creative output are composed of kaleidoscopic elements at both micro and macro levels (incorporating quotations from primary sources, visualisations, etc.), ultimately forming a comprehensive picture of the figure’s role in the history and culture of Ukraine.
Presentation of the emergence and development of Ukrainian science, through the modelling of media portraits of scientists, demonstrates the interplay between scientific and journalistic styles, which have been shaped by the influence of spoken language.
Key words: linguistic stylistics, elitist linguistic personality, Iryna Farion, the ‘Gene of Ukrainians’ project, Daria Vikonska, Kateryna Hrushevska, Olena Kurylo.
