Abstract
The article summarizes articles on spelling issues (spelling, punctuation, word change) published on the pages of the magazine “Culture of the Word” during the 1960s–2020s. Problem areas of formation in society and implementation of codified norms are noted, namely: official and business practice of using capital letters, quotation marks, writing abbreviations and their derivatives, spelling of new foreign-language borrowings, use of spellings “spelling of words together, separately with a hyphen”, “spelling of parts of a word”.
Attention is drawn to the fact that spelling practice is undergoing changes in the direction of generating variability that is not provided for by the norm, not only due to the slow assimilation of foreign borrowings in accordance with the norms of the Ukrainian literary language, but also due to the decrease in cultural and linguistic control of society.
Observation of modern official business practice, the language of media resources provides material for fixing trends in the attitude of society to the codification principles advocated by linguists. At certain stages, we observe chaos in the humanitarian sphere of everyday culture, when codifiers do not have time to react in official sources to impulses for the appearance of new word forms or their variants. The selected spelling problems for clarification, which have been receiving attention since 1960 and to the present day, testify to the constancy of attention of scientists and teachers to the norms of the Ukrainian literary language. The spelling discourse, which is supported by the contributors to the professional publication “Culture of the Word”, is a valuable source for explaining complex cases of Ukrainian spelling.
Key words: language culture, spelling, quotation marks, hyphen, capital letter.
