Abstract
The article represents a linguo-historical investigation of the Old Ukrainian lexical system in the religious written records of the second half of the 17th century – the beginning of the 18th century. The religious style of the Ukrainian language has a complicated way of development. During the 17th–18th centuries new genres appeared, they established baroque elements and the Old Ukrainian language. Priest’s sermons became very popular because they sounded in the native language and were oriented to a wide audience. At this time appeared Didactic Gospels – the written or printed books, where the sermons of Sunday and holiday conversations with interpretations of the Bible were collected. They became wildspread. Being written in the Old Ukrainian language the Didactic Gospels represented a new genre.
The author of the article characterizes the lexical features of the Old Ukrainian sermons collected in this Reshetylivka’s Didactic Gospel. As well as the author of this written book focused on explaining the triune God – God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, the rich lexical and terminological features are represented there.
It is noticed a great number of lexemes and word combinations denoting God the Son. The main attention was focused on explaining the Bible, the role of Jesus Christ, his life and destiny. The variety of nomens also manifested the special love of people for Jesus Christ as a God and a man, who lived among the people and knew all man’s problems and needs.
It is resumed that the priest’s speech reflected the fullness of lexical features that existed in the Old Ukrainian language in the second half of the 17th – the beginning of the 18th centuries. The lexemes, word combinations and descriptive constructions denoting the Divine Person reflect the peculiarities of the linguistic, cultural, religious and historical memory of the Ukrainians in general.
The study of the linguistic features of the sermons fixed in the Didactic Gospels, especially in written ones, is an important component of a complete representation the development of the lexical and terminological systems of the religious style of the Middle Ukrainian period, which had a direct impact on the establishment of the Ukrainian language of the modern era.
Key words: the Old Ukrainian language, religious style, church-religious writing, sermon, Didactic Gospel, handwritten record, nomination of Divine Person.
